Bastimentos, Panama – Sunshine Heroes, in collaboration with Give & Surf, has made significant strides in improving the lives of the Ngobe community on Bastimentos Island with the expansion of the Sunshine Children's Center. Originally established in 2015, the center has grown to include a classroom, computers, a library, health clinic, playground, and even a small skate park. This expansion is part of a continued effort to address critical educational and health needs on the island.

The Sunshine Children's Center is the first and only community center and public computer lab on Bastimentos Island, serving as a vital hub for over 300 children and their families. Local staff, supported by international interns and volunteers, provide educational programs, tutoring services, and health and safety classes. The center’s primary goal is to combat the island’s high illiteracy rate, which was over 81% before the introduction of these programs.

In addition to its educational services, the center is the first American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) training center in Panama. This will allow local community members to receive health and safety training, learning how to treat minor injuries and prevent common infections and illnesses.

With a total project cost of $42,000, the Sunshine Children's Center impacts over 3,000 people annually, providing crucial resources for education and health in the region.

“We’re thrilled to expand our work in Bastimentos and continue supporting the Ngobe community,” said a representative from Sunshine Heroes. “This center plays a crucial role in improving literacy rates and health outcomes for children and families on the island.”
