Sunshine Heroes Brings Clean Water to Chunox, Belize, Improving Health and Quality of Life
Chunox, Belize – Sunshine Heroes Foundation, in partnership with Who Lives and Going Beyond Borders, has successfully implemented a clean water solution for the community of Chunox, Belize, with the installation of a new water drill. This project will provide access to safe, clean water, significantly improving the health and quality of life for the local population.
Prior to this project, the community relied on open wells, which often led to contaminated water and resulted in severe illness and other health concerns. During the project, Sunshine Heroes’ team worked alongside local residents, lifting water from an open well nearby, pulling out debris, and even discovering a live turtle. This hands-on experience highlighted the urgent need for clean water in the area.
The new water drill taps into a pure aquifer deep below the surface, ensuring access to clean, drinkable water. Local residents were also trained in the use and maintenance of the drill, empowering them to sustain the project in the long term.
One of the project’s most significant impacts will be on the local school, where two children of Lidia, a mother of five, attend. The school’s piped water was previously undrinkable, and this new water source will provide clean water for 150 students. Moreover, the project will benefit families in the area, who will no longer have to purchase water from trucks every morning.
Lidia, the only woman on the drill crew, shared her motivation for working on the project: “It’s a big project. I want to make sure it gets done.” Her dedication, along with the hard work of many local residents, is a testament to the hope and determination that this project represents for the community.
“This is more than just a water project,” said a representative from Sunshine Heroes. “It’s about providing the opportunity for a better, healthier life for the families in Chunox and the surrounding areas. We are honored to have been part of this meaningful work.”
