OREM, UTAH – June 4th, 2025 – Former BYU basketball star and philanthropist Travis Hansen is sharing his powerful story of faith, family, and mentorship, reflecting on a life shaped by love, loss, and the guiding influence of Jesus Christ.

In a recent interview with Church News, Hansen recounted the miraculous moment he met his wife, LaRee, at the Utah Valley Institute of Religion shortly after returning from his mission. What began as a chance encounter quickly turned into a life-changing partnership that has now spanned more than two decades. “I was marrying perfection, and she was marrying potential,” Hansen said. “She changed my life — because I was in the right place at the right time.”

From BYU’s hardwood to NBA and Euroleague courts, Hansen brought intensity, grit, and faith with him. But his biggest impact came off the court. Following his mother’s death and a transformative mission in Chile, Hansen embraced a Christ-centered life, which he and LaRee carried into their years abroad — even founding the Little Heroes Foundation to serve orphans and vulnerable children worldwide.

Now a counselor in the Orem Utah YSA 4th Stake presidency, Hansen continues to mentor young adults, including BYU basketball standout Egor Demin, helping them see beyond athletics to what truly matters. “Sometimes you start with basketball and end up in a place where I think the Savior would be pleased,” he said.

Reflecting on the challenges of infertility, the pain of loss, and the power of temple covenants, Hansen emphasized, “There is power in your covenants. You might have to go through some hard things, but that power will help you get through your day — and for that I am incredibly grateful.”

Travis and LaRee Hansen’s journey is a testament to the miracles that unfold when individuals walk in faith, serve with purpose, and prioritize the Savior.
